A lot of people in this comment section underestimating black bears. It's true that they are not nearly as aggressive or dangerous as brown bears. It's true that they scare easily and are almost like forest dogs. However, there are times where they do attack, with and without provocation. And when they do, you are not going to have the ability to fight them off by hand. Take black bear encounters seriously. Don't turn your back on predators and have a plan do defend yourself with something.

You're being unfairly downvoted. It's true. Black bears are not protective of their cubs. Brown bears (like Grizzlies) are and you would be in much more danger in that situation.
