Newer person to the game and wanting to know if certain skills are better then others?

So far my favorite weapon is the sword, was using kunai prior to this but haven’t used anything else.
For the skills, I usually go for durian, electric shock, drill, shield/guardian, then save last spot in case I have to pick someone I don’t want.
Are there ‘load outs’ that work better for some levels versus others? Or is survivability meshed with skills and equipment and more dependent on that?
