Sleeping bag/Quilt question

I've been using the patrol bag from the MSS. I'm hoping to find something that can take up less space, around or below the weight of my current bag. I'm looking at down (preferably the hydrophobic treated variety) for weight/compactability/warmth. Not looking to spend over about $300, less is better, and am happy to consider quilts (they might even be preferred).
