Question about Alice packs (again)

Hey guys, there was a thread on here a couple days ago about alice packs. I posted a question but it went unanswered so here it is again. I have a northface hiking backpack that I know the ins and outs of. What are the pros and cons of an Alice pack vs a hiking style backpack? I know alice packs have a lot of cubic inches but anything besides that? I used huge pack like that canoing in Minnesota and I thought it was kind of unnecessarily large. Thanks!
