Hello r/surveying,
I am currently working as a hygiene technician for a consultancy on the mines in WA (the people you hate when we give you the dust pumps) but I am really interested in getting into surveying either underground or open cut. I have a few questions tho!
What course should I do to get an entry level role? Are there any traineeship positions and is it even possible to get a entry level job without any cert or diploma etc?
What does your day to day look like? How much field time vs office work do you typically do?
What does a typical roster and pay look like? I’m currently 8/6 12 hour days and on about $27 an hour (I’m getting shafted I know)
Is the job physically demanding?
I’m super keen to get my foot in the door and start learning just don’t really know where to begin. Any companies I should reach out to in WA that you know of?
Thanks very much!
Queensland Coal here but I'll have a crack.
- Some places taking cadets and putting them on ADSS (Associate Degree of Spatial Science). You could potentially start then if you snag a job they might cover it. Don't discount working for a local company in the cities for a while, it's a good way to get experience and they often take no experience trainees.
- Typical day will depend on jobs. We fly out updates on weekends so it's mostly flying UAVs with the tunes cranked most of the morning then processing in the afternoon. Sites will little or no machine guidance will be set out intensive. Otherwise it's mostly pit updates. Town jobs will be more field work but a greater variety of jobs.
- Typical rosters are 8/6 or 7/7 smaller places or entry level may be 5/2 or 9 day fortnight (5/2 then 4/3). Cadets I had on staff were $80k $10 site allowance flights and up to 20% STIP. Might not get that in town but it would be a way to get in.
- Can be physical at times but overall not really now.
