Has anyone done any of those FIFO Mining jobs? I knew of Red Dog Minds in Alaska but was told it was hard to get a position in that company. What are ways you can try to get these jobs? I also know more recently that Tok, Alaska, was a Mining site that had just opened.
Does anyone have experience with this? How would someone with some office and field surveying experience or LSIT cert help get the job? I'm interested in learning more. I'm taking my FS exam soon, but I keep considering trying some Mining surveying, especially in Alaska. Any thoughts or tips? Thanks!
Plenty of FIFO mine surveyor jobs down here in Australia! Don't have to worry about that pesky ice and freezing conditions! Does get a little warm occasionally.
Yeah a lot are remote camps. There are some that provide housing in the local towns. They're usually pretty flexible.
There was a bloke I worked with a few years ago that would do his 8 days on staying in the camp then go stay at a backpackers on the coast or go travelling in his wagon on the days off. He'd save bucket loads of cash and then take a swing or two off to go travelling.
There's a pretty significant shortage of surveyors over here. A few of the companies I've worked for have resorted to hiring outside of Australia to fill roles. I'm switching to another company soon but the current company is struggling to even get contractor coverage for the other open vacancy we have.
Perhaps hit up some of the survey contractors over here or the international mining companies with presence in the US and Australia. It's little effort to send some emails and quite a few places have vacancies available but have given up advertising.
Depends what you're applying for. Cadetships will take unskilled workers. Some places will take anyone who can use a GNSS unit and a drone.
No worries! All the best and hopefully something comes up for you.
I think a bit of experience would definitely help but there's such a shortage over here that you never know your luck. Half the struggle is finding people who are even willing to work remotely.

Just surface work personally but reckon if you're keen for underground they are more desperate for people than the open cut.
