How would you rank each of the different types of surveying pathways in terms of pay, w/l balance, career progression, job security etc. I have no idea whether I should do mining, engineering or cadastral.

You should do mining. There's no mine surveyor so plenty of jobs. If you're uni trained and have a bachelor's degree you can get registered and mining endorsed. Salary range for cadet to experienced is about $70k to $150k, endorsed usually $20k from that, although I hear there's an underground dude in the basin with $300k in his pockets
