Poor sound quality when using bluetooth headphones on SP3

I was wondering if anyone had experienced this/knows a fix.

I have some bluetooth headphones and when paired with the SP3, the sound quality is terrible - really low bitrate. I checked to see if it was a particular app/media file and it isn't. I also checked the settings on the headphones and they are set at phone quality on the bitrate, greyed out so I can't change it.

Does anyone know how to increase the bitrate? I have tried the headphones on my phone and using the same files it sounds much better, so I am convinced it is not the headphones, nor the media but the SP3 itself.
