First time ever using a Surface Pro 9 SQ3 (or any surface) vs iPad impressions

Post Body

First off, never been able to use iPad as anything more than a media consumption device. Whatever crack Apple is smoking to think that Stage Manager is any sort of a desktop replacement is nutty. SP9 form factor is indeed larger than the 11" iPad and more in line with my 14" MBP. Biggest reason why I never considered a Surface device was the kickstand. It's actually not as annoying as I thought it would be, so far, but I do wish there was some sort of iPad like floating magic keyboard option.

Bulletpoints:

  • Chrome ARM (canary) is pretty good. No Edging or the discomfort from such
  • Microsoft Store apps for Hulu, Netflix, etc are interesting. Not on par with native iOS apps by far, kinda stuttery from time to time but usable
  • Currently at 50% battery life after trying it out this evening, much better than most any Windows laptop I've used so far, and I've been on 5g the whole time
  • Unrelated, but AT&T 5G is awesome now, 140Mpbs down where I live and it's awesome my iPad sim just works for $20 a month, biggest reason I wanted the device
  • Slack sucks. It's my first taste of x64 apps emulated on ARM and it's not pretty. Like, it's really bad even on a 16GB RAM model.
  • I use the touchscreen a lot more than I thought when in laptop mode
  • A bit too big, but manageable for me as a tablet device. I never used my iPad very much without the keyboard
  • I'm keeping my MPB for the foreseeable future for dev work, iPad is going on eBay
  • SP9 screen and refresh rate is awesome, they nailed the resolution and I can't stand low res, or 60fps displays anymore
  • At best, this is still a $800-$1200 device especially with the compromises to performance. SQ4 better knock performance out of the park if they want $1,400 again. Got mine used in perfect shape for $900
  • Louder keyboard than my MBP or iPad
  • I'd switch back to iPad in a heartbeat, and the 12" model if it ran MacOS
