Screen crispness/readability compared to an older Kindle

Hey all, been trying to decide whether to buy the A5X or the Note Air, and the main thing holding me back from buying the A5X right now is the lack of backlight. If the Note Air had the stellar customer support and features roadmap from Supernote, I would have already bought the Note Air.

My main use would be to read academic articles (pdfs) and make annotations along the document or in separate note files. Calendar management and bullet journaling would be something I would also like to try. For reading fiction ebooks, I would still do it in my Kindle.

What I'm wondering is how the screen sharpness/crispness has evolved. My only other e-ink device is a Kindle Paperwhite I bought in 2013. Reading epubs/ebooks made for e-reader is still very doable if I shut off the backlight, but pdf articles are a struggle without the light. Not considering the size differences, if I struggle to read pdfs off a Kindle 2013, will I also struggle to read on the A5X? Or has e-ink tech and screen quality evolved quite a bit since 2013?
