Post Body

Physical: Olive skinned, most have dark curly hair. Dyes are common, either red with henna or bleached with lye. Both sexes wear hear long, with men sporting short beards. Eyes are normally brown. Tend to be short of stature.

Clothing: Varies across social class, but both genders wear similar clothing. Manual labourers such as subsistence farmers will wear simple shifts, two rectangles of cloth joined at the shoulder and under the arm, or nothing on the upper body. Trousers or kilts will be worn on the lower body. In cold weather sheep-skin or fur jackets are worn. Those who don't have to labour or travel wear long robes and gowns. Hats are common in cold climates, usually flat-topped or Phrygian. Poorer people will leave their garments undyed or have cheap, unfixed blue clothes. This dye rubs off easily, resulting in skin stained blue. The rich can afford clothes of red, purple and orange, with one layer often striped. Most fabric is cotton or linen. Footwear is similar across all classes, sandals in warm dry areas, unshaped leather shoes elsewhere. Gold, silver and copper ornaments are worn by those who can afford them. Normally rings, arm bands or circlets, sometimes with uncut precious stones set in them. Piercings anywhere on the body are disdained as unsophisticated. Soldiers will wear tunics beneath any armour and when off duty, with kilts or trousers on the lower body. Simple skullcaps are worn beneath helmets and when off duty, in order that soldiers become accustomed to the weight of a helmet.

Social classes: A large underclass of poor subsistence farmers, non-Clerdos, and poor urbanites. Fight as light infantry, rowers or archers in wartime. Rich farmers, craftsmen or merchants. Fight as heavy spearmen in wartime. Relatively a large percentage of the population, compared to the neighbouring nations. The richest form a council of advisers in their city, sadly without the power to veto decisions. Nobles, the governing elite. Would fight as cavalry in wartime, but the King has not currently ordered their enlistment.

Priests and priestesses of the goddesses exist outside the class system, with recruits coming from the children of priests or particularly inspired Clerdos. In general most priests and priestess are fairly poor, with the only exceptions being the high priests of manor urban temples, who often practice usury using the temple vaults. The duties of a holy man (or woman) are to deliver children, sacrifice to the gods, administer weddings, lay out the dead, and generally act as intermediates between the populace and the divine. The goddesses are worshiped in fine marble temples in cities, and at sacred groves, streams, gorges and mountains in rural areas. Quality of holy places varies greatly, ranging from a roadside shrine with crude wooden idols, to the private temples of nobles, with statues covered in gold leaf.

Priests of Tartaros are a new phenomenon in Clerdos, and it is not currently known how they function in society.
