Lost my paddle surfing. Safe to use a leash?

I was surfing the other day in a decent sized swell (for me) and lost my paddle on a wipe out. By the time I saw it again it was 30m ahead on me, right in the middle of the break zone. Discretion being the better part of valor I decided to get myself out of the break zone first and then recollect my paddle in a lull. Except that was the last I saw of it. Is it safe to put some kind of leash on it for the future?
