Disclaimer i thoroughly enjoyed this film. If you're a casual, that hasn't read the comic books or really follow the lore, you might enjoy it too. If you have some knowledge of the history of the Squad themselves but have not read the comics yet, you might also enjoy it. But much like every critic has posted since their viewings of early screenings, this movie is not without it's faults. A couple of problems I should address first.

A big factor as to why this movie was rathe lacklustre was heavy in part due to its scenery. Other than the fact that it's New York recycled over and over. Most of the scenes were shot in really bland locations. Either a dark street with some broken cars and a bit of fire. Or a building/hallway with literally nothing going for them. Some of these shots were horribly filmed that you couldn't tell what was happening most of the time. But I'll address that in a bit. Now, time to get into the meat of it

Pros:

  • It visually/aesthetically pleasing. Costumes are somewhat ok...5/7. A bit flashy at times, if you are ok with CGI.

  • Does its best to portray the people in the comics, with a few characters not exactly included.

  • Light humour every once in a while.

  • Stays true to their backstories.

  • Has a cameo from The Scarlet Speedster himself.

  • A small scene with Batman.

  • A post credits scenes.

  • If you enjoy Will Smith as an actor, this is the movie for you.

Cons:

  • They butchered Harley. I'm terribly sorry to all that enjoyed Harley here, but they did not do her justice. Margot Robbie is an astounding actor, but the director/writers/producers did not allow her to flesh out her character enough. "Hi I'm Harley Quinn, nice to meetcha" was particularly cringe worthy.

  • Joker. Yeesh, I enjoyed how they portrayed his joy for destruction and nihilism a bit more in this film, but he has very little screen time. and what little screen time he has is used to further elevate the love story subplot between him and Harley. This is not how you introduce Harley to the story. Harley was always more of a sidekick than a lover to the Joker. It was a one sided relationship and we always knew that, but the Joker falsifies most of his love to keep her in line. But let's face it, we all know what we're here for. His laugh. Joker's laugh could have done with a bit more work here. If Jared Leto had spent just a little more time working on his laugh, it would have made the Joker a little more enjoyable. I always saw Jared and never Joker which bothered me a bit.

  • Enchantress. Other than being the big bad of this movie, she has very little relevance otherwise. It was very formulaic, in the sense that, you get a big bad set to destroy the world, but the process she goes about doing it was far too simple. Compare to Ultron who was more fleshed out in the MCU, he had steps he needed to accomplish his task such as taking over a korean doctor's mind. Manipulating the twins, etc... but here Enchantress is just GIVEN everything and that harms her portrayal a bit. If she has such God-Like power, I don't understand how she could not have gotten away with her plans.

  • Slipknot. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. I am incredibly pissed at this one. Ok I know it's an homage to the original comics, but killing off a Canadian First Nation actor is not the way to go about it. There was so much potential to introduce him to the DCEU but they decided to go ahead and kill him instead. Way to go DC.

  • VERY weak plot. Again it's formulaic and so you're not given enough time to get to know the characters well enough to agree with their task, half the time you don't even know what the hell they're doing or what the fight is for in the first place.

  • Virtually no character development.

  • Some of the lines were cheesy and several of the hyped up characters during the trailers were downplayed.

  • The movie overall feels rushed.

But hey this is just my 2 cents, go watch it for yourself and judge it based on your taste. If you like it, go watch it.
