LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1000 USD, purchased in the US

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Absolutely

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance/$ is most important given the budget, with battery life second since it will be used for an entire day at college. Build quality is definitely a plus. Form factor isn't that important

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight is important since it'll be thrown in a backpack but thinness has a lot of wiggle room

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Preferred screen size is a 15" class laptop or smaller

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

This is mostly going to be used by a CS student who also frequently games. Programming is done in Java, Python, C . Mostly playing roguelikes such as Binding of Isaac, Risk of Rain 2, Dead Cells, etc

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Since it won't really be used for AAA games, preferably at highest settings, at 120 fps

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Prefereably having a 120hz screen (am okay with sacrificing resolution down to 1080p). Would be nice to have Windows Hello and an acceptable webcam/mic (due to classes in the COVID era). Also would like to have upgradable RAM and SSD slots but it's not a must if the laptop is well specced. Keyboard is relatively important since there will be a lot of typing, but screen panel takes priority

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Would definitely prefer to avoid the hardcore "gamer-y" aesthetic but if that's what's available then that's what's available. If was forced to prioritize due to budget, order would be: performance/$ >>>> battery life > panel quality > upgradablity >>>>>> keyboard > webcam/mic > usb C charging > weight and thickness >> thunderbolt
