It’s time for me to get a new laptop. Mine has lasted me 2-4 years but I’m afraid it’s starting to hurt. I’m only getting 15 FPS on old games and barely able to run anything anymore. Probably has heat damage from playing on the bed, and will definitely need to address this with the new one. But I’d like to get something as I travel across the US for work to do in my downtime.
LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1000
Are you open to refurbs/used?
As long as the quality is high.
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I don’t care about looks. I don’t care about battery life as I’ll likely only be playing it while it’s plugged in. I don’t want it to die between moving locations though. I just don’t need it to be on for more than 15 min without power.
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Slightly. Mostly due to the travel factor. I’m willing to do a 15” screen as long as it’s powerful.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15-17”
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Tons of gaming. I’m playing a lot of ARPGs and FPS lately.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Path of Exile is my main game. I do a bit of overwatch and other FPS. I do a lot of paradox games as well. Total war etc. I want to play newer games around 60fps and have a machine that can play the new releases years from now on low settings.
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Keyboard needs to be responsive. Mainly I’d like something with 16gb ram and a largish SSD.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I’m more than willing to sacrifice size for power. I travel constantly for work so weight is a bit important cause it’s going in the same carryon as my work computer.
