Post Body

I gave my mom my Dell XPS 13 about a year ago. It was great, but ultimately I felt it was too small and the screen didn't fold far enough back for my liking.

I'm in the market again. I feel that I need a 15" to be satisfied, but might settle for a 14". I'm looking for something thin and light with a high quality screen, but I worry 4K is too much given how crummy windows is at DPI scaling. I don't need a discrete GPU or touchscreen, but I won't rule out laptops that have them. I really want USB-C charging, which rules out all the Microsoft products.

These are the best candidates I've found so far, ranked by my current feelings (best to worst):

  • Lenovo X1 Yoga OLED (16:9 14" 2K)
  • Lenovo X1 Carbon (16:9 14" 2K)
  • HP Spectre x360 15 (16:9 15" 4K)
  • Dell XPS 15 (16:9 15" 4K)
  • Huawei Matebook X (3:2 13" 2K)
  • Asus UX550 (16:9 15" 4K)

The Lenovos look great, but I'm worried about them being 14". Let's say I decide to go 14", which Lenovo do I get? I LOVE the idea of an OLED touch convertible like the Yoga, but am worried about convertibles being a compromise that I'll regret. The X1 Carbon is more compact and is slightly cheaper, which is nice.

The x360 15" seems great too, but I have the same concerns about it being a convertible. The screen is bigger, which I like, but it's also 4K, which I think is a problem.

Last year I would have bought the XPS 15 without thinking twice, but after owning the 13" the damn limited hinge angle really chapped my ass.

The Matebook looks amazing, and I'm wondering if the 3:2 ratio makes the 13" size acceptable. I doubt it though.

I've heard lukewarm things about the UX550.

Sorry for the wall of text. Any other candidates I'm missing or any thoughts?
