Post Body

  • Total budget and country of purchase: In the USA and would consider spending anywhere between $1200-$2300

  • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications to your requirements for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Willing to consider all my options here as I plan on using this laptop all the time for lots of different things.

  • How important is weight to you? Not that important. I'd like to be able to bike around with the laptop in a messenger bag, but i don't need to carry anything else in the bag.

  • Which OS do you require? Windows, Linux, Mac. For this computer I'd prefer Windows, but would consider anything I can dual boot with Linux.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13"-15.6"

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If you have no requirements, put N/A. I will be doing programming and analysis (C, python, mathematica, matlab, gnuplot, etc) that will involve diagonalizing very large matrices, numerical integration, monte carlo, and visualizing large amounts of data. I will also be doing some gaming (below). I use Photoshop a little bit, but just for fun, nothing serious.

  • If you're gaming (leave blank if you put N/A above...), do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I occasionally like to game and don't want to worry that this laptop will be out of commission in 6 months. That said, I really have no strong desire to power through games on full settings. Things I have played: Rocket League, Arkahm City, WEPES, etc.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable business grade build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd really like to have a mix of usb, usb-c, and hdmi (i dont want to have too many adapters!) I'm going to be moving around a lot with this computer and i don't want it to be too flimsy and fragile. I know there is no great way to do this, but I'd like to occasionally be able to use the laptop outside as well. (Matte screens?)

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've had an HP Envy 14 (beats edition!) since the start of 2012 (five years woo!). I have Frankenstein'd the thing along, but then...Windows 10 happened. I tried to hold out, but eventually accidentally started the upgrade. It was an absolute nightmare getting my AMD graphics card to work, but eventually I found sound 3rd (maybe 4th!?) party support that got me moving. Alas, my computer has finally started having too many crashes and errors and I just can't take it anymore. Because of my coding and gaming desires I think I have my eyes set on a GeForce 1060 and at least 16 GB of DDR4 RAM. At home I have a cooling pad, keyboard, external monitor all set up. With my past computer I was only ever able to run one external monitor, but I might consider running more with this new computer. Some laptops that I am already considering are the Gigabyte P55Wv6, the MSI GS63VR, and the Alienware 13 R3 (OLED). Thanks for all your help in advance!
