[US, 15"-17", $500-$700] Friend wants new laptop for her business, intrigued by touchscreens
Post Body

She asked my advice, but I'm no help at all as I've never even owned a laptop. I just use Mac towers. So I apologize for not knowing much.

TLDR: She's got a home food business that she takes to farmer's markets. She'd like to be able to prepare marketing materials on her laptop (so theoretically we'd like to be able to run Adobe Creative Suite, but I plan to steer her towards less complicated options), as well as use it for social media and photo editing. She's intrigued by the tablet/keyboard type laptops like the Surface Pro (is that the right name?) where she could theoretically take just the tablet portion with her to the market, and have the potential to swipe credit cards.

If those kinds of laptops are any good, she'd probably prefer one. Touch screens sound cool too. This stuff is all in the questionnaire, too.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country of purchase: USA

  • Budget range: $500-$700

  • Purpose (netbook, ultraportable, mainstream, gaming, desktop replacement, etc.): pictures, social media, create documents and create designs, edit photos, create a banner or marketing materials. What about Surface Pro?

  • Screen size preference: 15-17, pref. 17

  • OS preference (Windows/Mac/Linux): Doesn't want to worry about viruses. Probably Windows or Mac.

  • Gaming requirements (example games and desired fps/settings): none

  • Other performance requirements (video editing, CAD, etc.): Capability to add a credit card thingy to it for swiping for her business.

  • Brand preferences and reasons (already owned accessories, familiarity, business compatibility): no prefs

  • Any particular style that you like (examples are great): Surface Pro - 1. tablet/keyboard, 2. you could use a pen to do stuff on the screen, Touch Screen. When business takes off she envisions having the tablet part there at the Farmer's Market, if she gets this kind of comp.

Which of the following qualities would you prefer? (Choose one, two, or balanced)

  • Long battery life -vs- Low weight -vs- High performance: high performance

  • Build quality -vs- Low price -vs- High performance: Price, high performance

  • Low noise/heat -vs- High performance: high performance

Which features would you pay a premium for?

  • High resolution screen: Yes!

  • A great keyboard: nah

  • A great touchpad/mouse buttons: no, I think

  • Great audio: nah

List any features that are critical: Quality, made well, run well, no problems
