As the title suggests, a small little machine for school, coding, will be the most use it'll get, and I will be running Emerge Desktop if that changes anything.
Country of purchase: USA
Budget range: <$420
Purpose (netbook, ultraportable, mainstream, gaming, desktop replacement, etc.): Basic word processing, web browsing and coding, using Libre Office, Opera, and a glorified text editor, respectively.
Screen size preference: Under 14" but over 12"
OS preference (Windows/ Mac/ Linux): Windows, with emerge desktop (I have a problem with the standard windows shell, and want to squeeze some extra performance out of it with a weaker GUI)
Gaming requirements (example games and desired fps/settings): Needs the graphics to play Super Star Trek and Adventure.
Performance requirements (video, CAD, etc.): Libre Office, third part media player, and needs the RAM to run Opera, but I'll settle with Firefox if it's about 2 Gigabytes.
Method of computer support (office supplier, college bookstore, self support): Self support, but I don't want to have to take it apart every 2 months.
Brand preferences and reasons (already owned accessories, familiarity, business compatibility): I have had bad experiences with Dell, have heard bad things about HP, had bad experiences with Acer too, but the timeline series seems promising.
Any particular style that you like (examples are great): Small, portable, and a usable keyboard.
Which of the following qualities would you prefer? (Choose one, the other, or balanced)
Long battery life -vs- Low weight: Balanced, I think about 4 hours battery life and under 7 pounds.
Build quality -vs- Low price: If it fits in the price range, then I'm for it.
Low noise/heat -vs- High performance: Low heat, I don't need the performance, I've got a desktop, but as long as it stays cool then I'm for it.
Would you pay a premium for something that has:
High resolution screen: Nahh
A great leopard: Preferably, but I can make do if that's not possible.
A great touchpad/mouse buttons: I'll be using external, there's no point in trying.
Great audio: I'll be using headphones, so no
List any features that are critical: (e.g. Optical drive, USB 3.0, SD card slot, ethernet port, HDMI port, bluetooth, VGA port, removable battery, glossy screen, matte screen, etc.) HDMI would be a huge plus.
