I can't recall him ever mentioning The Beach Boys or just Pet Sounds, which surprises me! "Here Today" just came on and I immediately thought of all the pageantry of Michigan and Illinois. The whole concept album vibe, the otherworldly madness, themes of introspection and self doubt, the melodies, the harmonies, the exotic instruments, the baroque pop extravaganza, and so on. I'm sure there's 100 more ways to describe both Pet Sounds and "Impossible Soul"! Can you even imagine a Sufjanian cover of "Sloop John B"? Would anyone else follow Brian Wilson's Tumblr?
