Using Sick Hours As A Sub (Not Long-Term)?

For those of you living in areas where your school district must give you sick hours, how do you use them? Call out on a sub job? I can cancel any sub job I take if it's at least 24 hours in advance, but the online system my school district uses locks me into a job after that time.
