So after being blocked by two of the three high schools in the district, I’ve been finishing out the year just taking jobs at the last one. About a month ago, a two week job popped up for 11th grade English that I picked up immediately, and then that two weeks became five weeks, and now it’s been extended through the rest of the school year! I met with the vice principal for 11th grade and they’re very happy I am willing to stay on for this time, and I have to admit, it’s really nice getting to know these students, even if a lot of them aren’t doing anything.
They don’t have me grading assignments (apparently it would take longer to get me up to speed on the expectations than it would to have someone else do the grading) and I haven’t really had to do much planning (there were supposed to be some AP English assignments that never showed up so I came up with some essay topics to write on, they’re working on tracking down a textbook for me to get lessons for the rest of the year, the only problem is the teacher I’m subbing for is the only AP English trained teacher here!) so far, but that will change soon, I suspect.
Honestly I couldn’t have asked for a better situation for the rest of the school year, my original plan after getting my teaching degree was to teach elementary for a few years while getting my masters and working towards teaching high school English, so at least I’m getting that opportunity now, even though I’m still looking for other work outside of education.
