So today is the end of my third week on what is going to be a five week and one day high school assignment for an English teacher, which is what I originally wanted to do as a permanent teaching job before I started losing my interest and enthusiasm for working in education entirely. All but one period is 11th grade English, and they are supposed to be writing an autobiography in eight parts, with each part being about a specific area, and each part is supposed to be worked on in one period. So this is a big assignment, and could have a big effect on their grade.
Putting aside students still coming in over 45 minutes after the start of class… looking around the classroom, while they are being quiet and well behaved, I can’t honestly say a single one of them is working on the assignment at all. I don’t know if they plan on blowing off the whole thing or throwing something together at the last minute, but either way, I’m very glad that my job isn’t affected by student performance.
The one period that isn’t 11th English is an 11th AP language and writing class, and honestly they aren’t any better!
But I will push on and do my best to teach and motivate them, even though it seems to be pointless. I can’t even imagine how their regular teacher feels about trying to deal with them on a regular basis!
I am not the one grading whatever they do, but whoever does end up doing it won’t have to do much, given what has been turned in!
I’ll actually be glad when this assignment is done and I’m back to one or two days in a classroom again.
