So here’s the latest in why schools can’t keep subs!
Last week I subbed for a teacher who had all ninth grade students, and at some point one of the students spilled their water bottle (they claimed accidentally but I don’t know). They tried to clean it up with paper towel and I called for maintenance to come and mop it up.
Well today I was leaving from what was supposed to be the first of four days in the same classroom and one of the principals wanted to see me, said a student claimed I said to them, “what are you, a bitch?” Or something like that. Now, regardless of the R-rated language the students use, I have always used appropriate language with the students at the high schools. And despite the fact that there’s never been an incident at this school involving me, they took me off the assignment and aren’t letting me take any other jobs while they investigate.
Like seriously, what the hell? Why would they take a students word over mine, and why am I being punished financially because of this? It’s not like I can sue the student or their parents or the district for the loss of pay here, I have no recourse available whatsoever because I’m disposable as far as the district is concerned.
I’m going to an educator job fair on Friday, maybe a different district will take me as a permanent teacher so at least I’ll have a union to back me up… or maybe I need to get out of education entirely. It already feels like my degree was a waste of time.
UPDATE: Frontline is showing available jobs for me now, although I’ve bit heard anything new from HR.
