How can this shape be evenly scattered across the surface? (Beginner question)

As you can see in the screenshot, I have a very simple setup. There's a tiled background with a shape rotated at a 45-degree angle being subtracted from it.

The result I want is for the cutting shape to appear at every tile corner, like the following:

I assume that I need to tweak the settings of the cutting shape, but I just cannot achieve the desired result. Here is a larger screenshot of my setup:
