Drama in reddit's numismatic communities as the mods of a popular buy-sell are all removed. Head mod of r/coins4sale exerts control and people are... unhappy
Post Body

Background: Reddit has fairly active communities in the coin collecting hobby, with subreddits like r/coins for general interest posts, and subreddits like r/Coins4Sale and r/Pmsforsale for buy/sell/trade of coins.

The drama starts with a self post from a former mod of r/Coins4Sale saying that he and all the other moderators of the popular buy/sell forum have been removed by the head moderator over a disagreement about the subreddit rules, specifically whether or not people who sell coins professionally should be allowed on the sub. A number of the regular buyers and sellers find the post and comment their support.

  • " Well that's shitty. I always thought you were fair and did a good job. "
  • "[Head mod] banned me from coins4sale for mentioning his name. Can we just make a new subreddit and let this dipshit have fun in his subreddit."
  • " Man, I just want to buy cool coins, lol. Drama sucks. "

Several prominent users in the community are subsequently banned by the (now only) moderator, and some make self-posts about it.

The community writ large gets wind of the situation and starts posting inflammatory posts on Coins4Sale, with some staying up for several hours before removal (Sorry, I didn't archive those posts, but I find some screenshots. Imgur links to Post 1 and Post 2).

After a day of chaos, fingerpointing, and radio silence from the sole mod of coins4sale, the moderator makes a "Want to talk" post, explaining that the entire existing moderating team was removed, there would be new rules on the subreddit, and immediately the comments on that post were locked.

Several users promptly ignore the new rules and post as they normally would, resulting in their posts being removed by the moderator. The moderator comments to explain the new rules, and his comments are fairly unpopular.

The drama eventually spills over into the sister-sub PmsForSale, with the head moderator of that sub posting about the drama, and appearing the side with the former mods of Coins4Sale. Comments on this post discuss the sorry state of their former home.

  • " Welp. I’m not sure about anyone else but I sure as shit am not buying or selling from an unmoderated subreddit. I’d feel safer hawking my wares from the trunk of my car in downtown Detroit."
  • " I’ve been permanently banned from 4sale, nothing else to say over there"
  • " What’s his end goal here honestly? Removing all moderators, banning active users who speak on the topic there. The whole subreddit is going to dwindle into nothing. "

If you've been clicking the links, you may know how this story ends. The old mods at coins4sale band together and start a new buy/sell/trade subreddit r/CoinSales. Several prominent users of the old subreddit now advocate leaving coin4sale and joining coinsales. At time of writing, Coins4Sale has lost a few hundred members, while CoinSales has gotten up to around 850 members. Several users also offer discounts and giveaways to celebrate the new sub.
