Am I nuts? Uhaul says it’s fine to exceed unbraked trailer capacity
Post Body

Was going to rent a 5x8 uhaul trailer to tow with my Outback Premium 2.5i with a dry weight of 900#. The trailer is not braked. Uhaul says it’s fine using my vehicle’s curb weight, and that the manufacturer’s limit (1000# un braked towing) doesn’t matter. Driving about 400 miles down 95 from New England to DC, so no crazy inclines. Should be packed to less than 2000#, including the trailer’s dry weight. I don’t think exceeding recommendations is illegal, as long as I’m not above any jurisdiction’s weight limit for non braked trailers, and I see lots of other success stories with towing by Subaru. The Uhaul guy says Subarus do it all the time. Is this nuts? Am I going to ruin my CVT attempting this?

EDIT: Okay! Points all taken. Others’ success doesn’t guarantee mine. Not going to exceed to 1000 pound unbraked capacity. Shelling out for the truck and car transport trailer (not a dolly).
