Hurt back when squaring today

Hi,
Iām in week 4 of the 5x5 . I have worked my way up to squatting 160 on the smith machine. Everything is was going great until today when my I tried to squat and my hip rotated back and all that weight came down on my spine.
Hurts like a bitch. Need recovery tips and prevention tips.
Also I already have a herniated disc so is there some other exercise I can sub for squatting like the the leg press machine ?
