How important are precise inputs?

So I don't know the term for this exactly (if there is one I would love to know it). But an example of what I'm talking is Luke's target combo:

MP~MP~MP~MP

That could be done with exactly 4 button presses timed correctly or you could mash MP until the combo is done (personally I find myself pressing MP 5 times).

Another example is pressing a normal a bunch to combo out of a super.

Is mashing here a bad habit that is best to be avoided for even beginners and intermediate players? Something only really good players need to worry about? Or something that's not an issue at all?
