Please Critique! I haven't cracked open the book yet. so I"m excited for that.

Summary:

  • Bible is true because holy spirit confirms it's true via
    • prophecies
    • Laws of nature, good/evil (are arbitrary when made by man, but objective when made by God)
    • Look at reality and see things match
    • Law written on our hearts You know God Exists.
  • Me: How do we know the Bible is true as opposed to the Quran?
    • all monotheistic religions borrow from Christianity. Islam, Mormonism, etc. but say Bible has errors, but don't have any evidence to back up the claim that the Bible has errors.
  • *failed to point out\* But Judaism is older than the Bible, and Christianity actually adds on to Judaism. By the logic of basing truth off which religion is the original, Judaism would be the true religion.
  • *Failed to point out\* Also, It sounds like we're dismissing Mormonism, and other religions as false because they don't have evidence to back up their claims. So does this mean if the Bible didn't have evidence to back up its claims, it too, would be false?
  • Bible is true because laws of Good and evil are created/defined in the bible/by God
    • *Failed to point out\* So we're saying the bible is true because the bible has written out what is good and evil. In other words, the bible is true because the bible says it's true?
  • Bible is true because You have to do Good works to be saved in all other religions. Christ died for us

** See Stumbling block at the end *\*

Missed Opportunities:

  • (question for myself) Why do organisms have a desire to reproduce / survive? (Is it because the ones with that desire DO survive? Therefore that trait is passed onto the next generation?)
  • Where do the laws of Good and Evil come from? So laws of Good and evil are "objective" because of God, but if they were just opinions of man, they're just opinions
    • Good and Evil is just Gods opinion. Which is arbitrary. Right?
    • Arbitrary Ex of God's morality. Don't wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.
  • Judaism is older than Christianity. So, actually Christianity is adding onto Judaism, So this would mean Judaism is true, not the bible. Judaism actually rejects the new testament entirely.
    • So, Going by "all religions borrow from the bible" as logic, would actually suggest judaism is true.
  • Him: Other religions based off Bible lack evidence that their claims are true.
    • *What I SHOULD HAVE said* "So the other religions are false because they lack evidence of their claims. So if the Bible lacked evidence of its claims, would it be false too?
  • **uncaused causer is the dense point according to atheists

** Stumbling Block: ** I don't understand. and my brain was starting to get tired. It sounds like he's contradicting himself below. Saying "use the world as evidence" but then.. don't trust it. trust the bible because it's the starting point.

Me: I'm confused by why good / evil / sin makes the bible true. Evolution claims big bang and here we are. How we feel about good/evil and whether we're perfect or not doesn't seem relevant to how we got here.

Him: Morality doesn't make the bible true, the bible is true.

\- Heat doesn't make the sun true, it's just evidence the sun is there.

\- Can't make something true by describing evidence for it (???)

\- How would you make something true?

Around Minute 18:00 ~ **\*

Me: I believe water is in this bottle because there's atoms & molecules inside it that make up water, right here in the bottle.

Him: I don't believe that.

Me: Well it's right here.

Him: I believe I'm in a simulation. I don't believe that my senses are trustworthy. I believe I'm plugged into the matrix. Can you prove that's true to me?

Me: No?

Him: How do we know what truth is period?

Him: We know what truth is by having presuppositions.

\- My senses are accurate.

\- Nothing to go past senses.

\- Must have starting point. Starting point is "my senses", or "my brain". I believe the bible.

\- If you can't trust your senses how do you know it's true? I couldn't

\- Outside of the bible you're just guessing. (20:00) \*\*\*

\- Correlate with reality 20:53 - What is the foundation from which I guage all else to be true?

\- Start with Bible is true. Then ask does world match up?

We had another 55 minute after this one with the actual pastor. The pastor admitted that lack of evidence of the bible would cause him to doubt. The more confident guy was only a seminary student.
