Sage’s Sigils

I was wondering what the conditions were for losing your Sigils are as a sage and the way that people prep ultima. It does seem a bit wasteful to just splash out 6 spells all at once just for ultima, but I’m new to the job so I don’t know. Any help is appreciated :)
