So once in my American History class, we were talking about the Civil War. This girl who I have known since I was kindergarten and is one of those extremely basic, white girl types. She can name every drink at Starbucks, but ask her to place England on a map? She'll point at India and get mad when she's wrong. Not saying "basic white girls" can't be smart, I've met numerous who are, just this specific one is not. So we're sitting in class and we begin talking about how Lincoln implemented martial law in the South during the war. The teacher asks, "Can anyone give me an example of martial law being used more recently?" and I answered the question, referencing the Freedom Riders during the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama during 1961. To me talking about martial law being used more recently, Kevin said "OH MY GOD! HE'S STILL ALIVE???" She thought "martial law" was "Marshall Law". She thought this was a person who had been alive since the CIVIL WAR. That is 155 years! This Kevin has said numerous things like this even saying once that she legitimately didn't know who the US fought in the Revolutionary War, which would be acceptable if we were not from the US, but we are! And no, she was not kidding.
TL;DR: Kevin in my class thought "martial law" was "Marshall Law" and a real person and had been alive since the Civil War
