I think many people end up stimming to hide deep pain, an empty void, depression, or the aimlessness of their lives, to name a few things. On the other hand, some people might think they need stims to be productive and that without them they are failures.
Greene's book is wonderful. It is sort of a distillation of ideas from all but one of his books, plus some other sources. He talks about finding your purpose and how doing so will bring more pleasure than drugs. You'll find pleasure in doing what you love. He shows you how to do it.
He also shows you how to navigate the world, among other things.
Greene helped me work out a plan for my life. I was lost, so I think turning to stims helped mask the pain and depression I felt at going nowhere. I have realized that you can get so used to taking stims that you don't even know why you're taking them. It's like, "Why did I even take these? What should I do for the next 8 hours? Try to read a book? Or lose myself on Instagram and fapping?"
