Gym or running?

Most of my adult life (before addiction ofc) I used to hit the gym working out really hard and enjoyed it very much. Recently I read a lot about the benefits of running especially neurogenesis and Iโ€™m wondering if it is better for my recovery. From your personal experience which one helped you the most? I donโ€™t really have experience in working out during my recovery is started to workout regularly just this week
