I’ve been glancing at things like how Toyota is phasing out it’s V8 engine. It’s not because it isn’t profitable for them or a problematic motor. Nope. It’s because they’re eyeballing the end of them making any internal combustion engines of any kind. And that’s roughy 30 years from now.
(Toyota is going to accomplish this through turbocharging V6s and V4s, which to their credit to kick some ass).
I think the autonomous technology is essentially ready. I think the automakers need time to build out an ecosystem of sensors and relays as ultra wide-band 5G gets rolled out. But the software itself is ready. So they’re aligning the rollout to the public alongside the very tail end of the ICE engines. All that to say, 28 more years, plan accordingly.
Personally. I will be driving my 2005 Toyota 4Runner with a replacement crate turbo V6. Will have a lot of aftermarket and junk parts but will still be solid. I’ll be one of maybe 20 people in my entire city that will still be driving manually on our city roads. Think about that.
