Seriously, think about it. If you restrict everyone to one sexual partner, a narcissist or psychopath has however many kids one woman can have, plus maybe a couple more on the side if he can get away with it. If you allow people to have sex with whoever they want, the same narcissist or psychopath can have dozens of kids or more, spread out everywhere. If there's a big genetic component to narcissism and psychopathy, and there seems to be, that means there's going to be an exponential growth of narcissism and psychopathy every generation.
It's crazy to think about.

More fundamentally though it's a numbers game. If you have a handful of harems and like 40% of young men incapable of finding a mate your society is incentivized to wage constant war and undergo constant deprivation to cull the leftovers.
That's arguably why rape in war is so common as well and why the wives of soldiers are so common in cheating that it's become a running gag at this point.
Monogamy might not be natural but it's civilizing.
This becomes even more striking when you consider that humans in the modern sense might've been around for over half a billion years and just didn't get anywhere of note for most of it cause everyone was just stuck venerating bulls and dying in wars of extermination.
