Question about slamming

Now I've never shot and have no interest in it whole thing about the second that plunger goes down your life disappears. I am curious on muscling though? I see people talking about missing a vein and getting an abcess, but at the same time if you can't find a vien muscle it. What's the difference between missing a vien and muscling it and how does one cause and abcess and the other doesn't?
