How much should I be relying on muscle memory to help it improve fastest?

Post Body

I came back to stepmania after a long break, around 2 years, and I've noticed that my reflexes are not nearly as consistent as before. If I am not actively reading each note, my fingers will occasionally just not move when I want them too, even if it is in a very slow sequence. I want to stop this from happening as soon as possible, but I wasn't sure if it is better to play songs only relying on muscle memory, or actively reading everything to try to drill the memory back into my hands. Which way is better?
