Looking to get back into the game... What's changed over the past year or so?

Hey there! I was a big fan of this game when it launched and for the first couple of years later, but I've fallen off the bandwagon and haven't played it in a bit, really not since Federations. I've been thinking about getting back into the game though, and I'm wondering what major changes have happened since then that I should know about before jumping back in?
