Dark Matter tech

Getting dark matter tech was always elusive for me, never could find it.
However had a battle with those military isolationist stag/fallen empires. My federation beat the "knees" (Ya super cool if ya know that reference) of em.
I switched to debris scan from minerals to research and boom, I got 2 dark matter techs n the "spooky" jump drive .
Not sure if that was the ticket to dark matter tech. Anyone have any idea if that's why?
