Reducing Memory Overhead in Desktop Mode

Post Body

Howdy Folks,

I've been noticing that I've been getting some occasional out of memory errors when playing games... well mostly one game XPlane 11 and as part of my investigations I found out that there seems to be qutie a bit of fluff running in desktop mode. Just running steam and the system monitor I'm noticing memory usage sometimes as high as 5 GB (more than 1/3 of what's available) just keeping the lights on vs: about 2.1 GB doing the very same thing on a computer running the same two programmes on a manjaro linux installation. I know it's not quite apples to apples but 4-5 GB being used is... rather high for linux just spinning gears and it consequently greatly reduces what one can run in desktop mode.

Wondering if any folks here might have some ideas or suggestions on things to try.
