Thumb sticks have ~1-3mm travel

I just realized today after about 2 months of having my OLED that both thumb sticks can be pushed in and back out. I mean you can push them in as buttons like a PS controller and then it’ll pop back out to its normal place, but after it returns you can also pull it back out another 1-3mm. Is there a functionality reason for this?
