Any Mame users know how to save controls in Gaming Mode?

I am playing the first Mortal Kombat and have been trying to figure out how to properly map the controls to a PS5 controller. When I do the standard menu, the button mapping never works properly. When I use tab and do the (this system) button mapping, it gets me exactly what I need, but never saves the button mapping properly. Any ideas of how to fix this?
