This might be a rare issue but just in case it helps some people I thought I'd post it.

When I have a download going in Steam, I noticed all my sound was getting occasional 'popping' regardless of source, and my cursor wasn't displaying smoothly. There was a process called System Interrupts that was taking 20-25% of my cpu resources, and pausing the download was the only thing that stopped it, instantly clearing all problems.

There is some mention of this if I Google it, but since I didn't get anything searching here I thought I should post it in case anyone else has similar issues and didn't manage to track down what it was.
