Best Options for playing with a controller?

Having built up a decent game collection, I've been considering getting a controller for playing games. I'm really not sure the best way to go about that, though. I'd need something that would would work on my laptop, which dual boots Ubuntu and Windows (and I need both OSes to use all the games I have) and works well with Steam. Any suggestions?
