So far I've mainly just played turned based games where quick actions and moving is nothing more than point and click. What about action, shooter type games that require a lot of moving and other actions? Are controllers used commonly or do people just use keyboard key setup? If controllers are used are all games compatible with them or how would I find out?
Edit: Thanks for all the input everyone. I notice a lot of people talk about XBox controller. Would a PS4 controller work or am i better off purchasing something else?

Platformers are a mixed bag in terms of requiring a controller. In many there's few enough extra inputs and directions are locked to either just the cardinals or eight directions.
