As promised, Part 2 of the double header looks at the delightful Season 4.
Stargate SG1: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Season 1)
Stargate SG1: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Season 2)
Stargate SG1: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Season 3)
Holy mechanical spiders, what a finale for Season 3! Who wouldve thought tiny spidey robots could be a match for the mighty Asgard. Season 4 is another gem in the SG1 crown which refocuses on the Goa'uld and some of their history and lifestyles. Familiar Earth politics also return with mysterious powermongers starting to manipulate the political landscape. The character relationships are also taken to a new level with some old wounds opened up again and some new personal goals set. The season somewhat loses its lustre towards the end with some filler episodes but makes up for it yet again with a cracker of a finale which leaves us wondering how the hell SG1 will get themselves out of yet another bind.
SEASON 4
The Good - Window of Opportunity - Episode 6 - Whats better than Jack and Teal'c stuck in time loop? Jack and Teal'c stuck in a time loop while trying to explain science and learning Ancient. Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the top 3 Stargate episodes of all time, Window of Opportunity takes Groundhog day to another level. A beautifully paced comedic masterpiece sandwiched between a story of a desperate man trying to re-unite with his wife. Richard Dean Anderson and Chris Judge take their acting to another level and are ably supported by the others. The change in direction mid episode and the epic one liners in this episode prevent the episode from getting repetitive (get it? Hehehe). This episode makes us completely forget about the ongoing threat of the Goa'uld and provide nice comic relief. If you need a good "pick me up" after a bad day, just watch this episode!
The Bad - The Light - Episode 20 - Huge toss up between a couple of episodes in this season but The Light is truly bad. Barely any redeeming qualities and a rather forgettable storyline. Even the confected outrage from Carter did not fit her acting style. A poor episode which showcases the lack of ideas towards the tail end of the season.
The Ugly - Beneath the Surface - Episode 21 - Beneath the Surface has a great premise but lacks the oomph to drive this home. Memory stamping/manipulation becomes a common theme towards the latter seasons but the first foray into such a story arc is not the best. While the idea of a secret underground slave labour camp sounded good, it lacked in certain areas and could have been expanded upon further. I think the producers of SG Atlantis had the right idea when they introduced the Genii in a somewhat similar society. We never really get a background to the planet they are on or how SG1 allowed themselves to be captured so easily. Choice of actors could also have been better.
The Honorable Mentions - Episodes 3 (Upgrades), 13 (The Curse), 14 (Serpent's Venom) and 17 (Absolute Power) - Some great episodes which are taken to a level above the traditional fillers with some great casting and mythology. Vanessa Angel (Anise/Freya) plays her role very well in Upgrades (and subsequent episodes) while Anna-Louise Plowman is the perfect Osiris. A huge thumbs up for Serpent's Venom and Absolute Power for showcasing the plethora of awesome technologies in the Stargate universe.
Hope you enjoyed and as always I would be very interested to hear the community's feedback and thoughts!
