Stargate SG1: The Good, the bad and the ugly (Season 3) SPOILERS WITHIN
Post Body

Now I promised I would get these out quicker but it seems I havent lived up to my promise. As a gift, Ive decided to do TWO seasons today. Season 4 post will be up very shortly after this one! I hope you enjoy this edition.

Stargate SG1: The Good, the bad and the ugly (Season 1)

Stargate SG1: The Good, the bad and the ugly (Season 2)

Just when we thought Season 2 shook off the cobwebs and started to get down to business, we see the "death" of our major enemy Apophis. Season 3 is a brilliant season and we finally start to see the franchise shine. Without a main villian, we see the majority of the season littered with standalone episodes which provide a bit of relief while also maintaining aspects of the main story arches. Things really peak with the mid-season double header which sees our favourite villian return with gusto (as well as cameos from some of the secondary characters). All in all, Season 3 does a brilliant job of setting up Season 4 where we see the formidable enemy of the Asgard and the battle against a familiar foe.

SEASON 3

The Good - Fair Game - Episode 3 - With so many great episodes, it was really hard to pick the best of the season. I chose Fair Game because it's got a little bit of everything. It's got the Asgard (who doesnt love Thor!), introduction to new Goa'uld, clumsy diplomacy of Jack, "a Jaffa revenge thing" and the seriousness of losing the Stargate for good. It really gives everyone a chance to shine and provides some context into the fragile relationship between the Tauri, Asgard and the Goa'ulds. The negotiation seen is particularly pertinent because of the contrast in the way Jack is treated by both parties. The episode also finished with a rare display of sympathy by the Goa'uld, who up until now have been portrayed as pure evil, which was also a nice touch. All in all a brilliantly paced episode with some major implications down the line.

The Bad - Past and Present - Episode 11 - This was a toughy. There are no outright bad episodes in this season and I would happily watch any of them if it came to a lucky draw, however, I needed to choose one and this was it. A fairly lackluster storyline which is a bit hard to believe at times. While the Linea story was good, it never brought the fear that went with her tagline of "Destroyer of Worlds". If anything, this episode made her look incompetent in that she buggered up her own formulas to the point of causing mass amnesia. She was clearly shown as a competent scientist so this seems rather far fetched. Also, why didnt she just use the same methods she used for the other worlds she apparently destroyed. The whole relationship with Daniel also seem very fake since they really didnt have anything in common (before or after the amnesia). It's a watchable episode but probably one of the weakest in the season.

The Ugly - Crystal Skull - Episode 21 - Again, not the worst episode in this season but certain things in this episode left a sour taste. While the premise was great, the implementation could have been better. There a lot of questions that arent quite answered in this episode. How did the skull get to Earth and why was it even here? How could the giant aliens even "fight" the Goa'uld if they werent even in our phase? Things just seemed to be slapped together without regard for these questions. There is also the matter of low quality CGI and some of the humour seemed a bit fake. It wouldve been great if we had a follow up episode but unfortunately, we never actually hear of these aliens or Daniel's grandfather ever again which is a bit of a shame.

The Honorable Mentions - Episodes 4 (Legacy), 6 (Point of View) and 16 (Urgo) - I couldnt finish this review without creating a new category. These episodes standout because of their action or comedic value. Seeing Teal'c and Jack swap bodies was worthy of mention and who can forget Teal'c skulling a jug of boiling coffee. Alternate reality episodes always give me a nice tingly feeling inside so had to be included!

Hope you enjoyed and as always I would be very interested to hear the community's feedback and thoughts!
