Okay I'll try and keep this short. (Spoiler alert: I failed. I am so sorry. There's a TLDR tho.)
Starfield has been my most anticipated game since mass effect 3. I have watch the trailer and gameplay demo at least 15 times a day for the past 3 months 🤣 I've never ever played a Bethesda game and assumed it would be something like mass effect. I got so excited that I decided to try out Skyrim and Fallout 4.
That was a huge mistake.
I like fallout. The physics aren't bad...I see where it's an evolution of Skyrim....I also like Skyrim as well... For such an old game the graphics and lore still hold up surprisingly well. It's no surprise why people still play it..
My problem comes in with 2 things: companions and crafting/building.
1) Companions get in the way, block doorways, you can't walk through them and they get lost VERY easily. I accidentally told one of them to "stay" and they STAYED. I literally lost them till I walked back to the area days later and there they were waiting (which is kinda cool that the game remembers that tbh). I can't tell you how many times I'm trying to look something, then out of nowhere companion pops up and jumps in my reticle somehow and now we're talking or I accidentally dismissed them. In the latest teaser (over Todd's shoulder) we see a companion standing next to the ship, they run to catch up to the player that huge delay in the time it takes for the companion to show up is just as bad as FO4 and Skyrim. So I'm a bit worried that it'll be more of the same frustration there.
2) My other issue is crafting/building settlements. I just spent the entire weekend building my dream settlement and it hit me..... I was using mods to give myself the crafting materials needed. Fallout 4 is EXTREMELY scarce when it comes to certain materials. Some of them our just downright impossible to find. If it wasn't for mods I wouldn't have made much progress.....then it downed on me again...this weekend I just went through 4000 peices of wood, 3000 peices of steel and about 2-3000 peices of other crap.
It would have literally taken me MONTHS to find those materials and even then probably wouldn't have had enough to build what I was trying to build.
TLDR; I'm afraid that without mods my most looked forward to features (base building and ship building) will be locked behind mining, farming, skills, and perks. I know it's an RPG but I kinda just want to idk....get in there and build my space ship to go explore the galaxy and build out my story..
It'll take weeks of playing to make enough money, find enough materials, and level up enough to have access to building the way that we want to. It'll take who knows how long (years) before someone mods the new game) normally I'm anti-cheat but dude I work 3 jobs. I just wanna build shit. Even Minecraft and Subnautica has a creative mode that removes the farming and just lets you sandbox it.
Anyway. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
