My unpopular opinion: George Lucas is a BAD filmmaker.

Now please let me clarify and give context before you all threaten to cut me open like a Tauntaun. I worship at the feet of George Lucas. He is an absolute god and titan of the film industry. He has pioneered so many amazing and incredible technologies and the industry would not be where it is today without him. From ILM to Skywalker Sound to Pixar and everything else. He is an absolute legend.

But, when it comes to him as a filmmaker and a director, he is honestly really terrible at it. As much as A New Hope is one of the most iconic and greatest films ever made and I love and adore it to pieces, I truly believe that that movie was a fluke, and I also very much believe that if he had directed all 3 films in the original trilogy, the trilogy as a whole would have been and unmitigated disaster.

There is a list of issues and problems with the prequels longer than my height, and I am a tall guy (6 foot 2). From the writing, to the dialogue, to the performances to ruining legacy characters (Yoda being the most prominent) to the OVER-USE of CGI and on and on and on. I honestly was cringing through 95% of Revenge of the Sith while re-watching it to prepare for Obi-Wan Kenobi. I really do not like the prequels AT ALL, with a few exceptions such as the music (obviously), SOME of the acting from Ewan and Ian and a few other minor things, but other than that, I think they are dumpster fire movies.

What George should have done is write say a 10-20 page outline of the 3 prequel movies, then hand those off to actual screenwriters to turn it into 3 actual movie scripts (and revise and edit them, not just shoot the first drafts of them) and then either let somebody different direct each film or shoot all 3 back to back with the same director. If that had happened, I think those 3 films would have had a much better flow to them. Honestly, I think Dave Filoni should have been the one to direct the prequel trilogy. I don't know if it would have been possible at the time, but a man can dream can't he?

Just because Lucas had the technology at the time when making the prequels, that didn't mean he had to rely on it for 99% of the films. Who the hell thought that it was a good idea in a movie called ATTACK OF THE CLONES to have LITERALLY every single clone be CGI. There is not one single clone that is a real person in a real suit of clone armour. Lucas has stated for years that Jurassic Park was the movie he saw when he realised that the technology was there and it was ready for him to make his prequel movies, and yet the CG in Jurassic Park looks better, even now than the majority of the CG in all 3 prequels. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!

And then there is the Special Editions debacle. where Lucas proves once again that he just cannot leave well enough alone and goes and fucks with 3 already near perfect movies and fills them with shit CG that was outdated within a few years and completely ruins scenes and shits all over iconic characters (Han Solo being the biggest example). Changing lines and adding scenes that ruins the flow of the movie. The whole galaxy wide celebration after the death of the Emperor was awful and Hayden as a force ghost replacing Sebastian Shaw made NO SENSE!

To me, The Clone Wars animated TV series is everything the prequel films should have been where the characters were actually fleshed out and likeable. We got to spend time with them and see them go on adventures to all different unique looking planets. The clones all had their own unique looks, personalities and thoughts. It was just amazing.
